A belief that changed everything
Most businesses don't make it to 37 years. The ones that do tend to have something in common: they started with a conviction, and they never let go of it. For Cindy and Ro, that conviction was simple, and at the time, a little radical. Great massage therapy starts with taking care of the people who do it. Not just the clients - the therapists.
"It sounds obvious now," Ro told us, "but when we started, the industry wasn't talking about burn-out. Therapists were quitting the profession in three, four years. We thought: that's not sustainable for anyone.”
“We didn't want to build a place where people came to recover. We wanted to build a place that didn't break people in the first place.”
How it started
The Massage Center opened its doors in downtown Lexington in 1989, before wellness was a lifestyle category, before self-care was a hashtag, before most people had ever booked a professional massage.
Cindy had just finished her training and had a clear picture of what she didn't want to recreate.
"I'd seen places where therapists were just bodies on a schedule," she said. "Eight clients a day, no breaks, no support. I knew I wanted something different. Something that could actually last."
What they built has lasted, and grown. Today, The Massage Center is home to 14 massage rooms, 2 esthetician rooms, a light-filled yoga studio, and a boutique tucked into the heart of downtown. But Cindy is quick to point out that the square footage isn't the thing she's most proud of.
What makes this place different
Walk into The Massage Center and you'll notice something that's hard to name at first. The front desk team actually seems happy to see you. Your therapist isn't rushing through a turnover. There's a pace to the place that feels intentional. That's because it is. From the beginning, Cindy and Ro built a culture where therapists are encouraged to bring their individual artistry to each session, not just execute a menu item. "We don't want robots," Ro said. "We want healers who are actually present with you."
That philosophy extends to the services themselves. Whether you're coming in for a Swedish massage to decompress after a long week, deep tissue work for chronic tension, or one of their Korean skincare facials, the approach is the same: unhurried, skilled, and genuinely attentive to what you need that day.
37 years later
We asked Cindy what surprised her most about getting to this point. She paused for a moment.
"The clients who have been with us for decades," she said. "People who started coming in their 30s and are still here in their 60s and 70s. That tells us something, that this was actually a part of their health. Not a treat. A regular practice."
That's the shift they've always hoped to see. Not massage as a luxury. Not a one-time splurge. A consistent, reliable part of how you take care of yourself, the way you'd think about exercise, or sleep, or eating well.
Ro put it plainly: "We've always believed Lexington deserved a place like this. Somewhere you can come back to. Somewhere that knows you."
